PROCEDURES
Mark's
preference, regarding all commissions,
is to work from life as much as
possible. However, given people's
schedules, distances and other
logistical concerns it is not always
practical or possible. While some
clients have been able to arrange their
schedule so as to accommodate a portrait
from sittings, the artist is flexible
and open to the common alternate ways of
partial-use of photography, and even to
the full use of photography.
In the case of animal portraiture Mark
will work from the digital photos he
personally takes, as well as doing
sketches to familiarize himself with the
unique characteristics of the subject.
Particularly, in the case of horse
commissions, Mark would like to visit
the farm -- perhaps several times to do
additional drawings -- when
possible and as distances permit.
For portraiture within the metro Atlanta
area, a 11/2
to 2 hour meeting will be arranged to
get acquainted with the principals
involved, to decide a general look of
the portrait, to do initial drawings and
to take reference photos. When the final
pose has been decided, 30% of the fee
will be paid at that time.
The artist will then do a pencil drawing
as a compositional study and another
meeting will be scheduled. At that time
the client will be allowed one
opportunity to make small revisions and
requests. Upon client's approval Mark
will carry the work to completion. The
objective of the compositional is not
necessarily to get a likeness as it is
to render the overall look and feel of
the finished portrait.
Regarding the duration of a project--
that varies. Some commissions can be
done on a strict deadline while others
require flexibility-- depending on the
nature of the project. This will be
discussed during the initial meeting
with the artist.
Upon completion the client will be
invited to view the portrait at the
artist's studio and, with their
expressed satisfaction, the balance of
the payment will be required at that
time.
